Thousand Oaks Residence is a 12,000 square foot, five-bedroom family home in California designed by architects Rios Clementi Hale with interiors by NICOLEHOLLIS. With the heart of a modern farmhouse, the home embraces the outdoors with floor-to-ceiling windows and an interconnected series of patios and entertaining areas including a pool and fire pit. The property also includes a separate guest cottage and a pool house with a gym. Interiors were designed around the family’s lifestyle, from supporting their interest in entertaining to highlighting their art collection that includes work by Richard Serra, Damien Hirst and Ed Ruscha as well as up-and-coming and West Coast artists. Even the material palette was personalised, its muted colours inspired by a dusty pale jade egg from one of the family’s Araucana chickens. The colour was used for custom cabinetry throughout the home, met by natural materials including stone, wood and linen.

De La Espada furniture is used throughout the home: Bench with Back by Studioilse in the entryway; Hepburn Sofa by Matthew Hilton in the master bedroom; Manta Dining Chair, also by Hilton, in one of the offices and the stairwell; and Elysia Lounge Chair by Luca Nichetto in the living room.

Hepburn is glamorous and light, lifted from the floor on elegant solid wood legs. An almost limitless variety of configurations can be produced making Hepburn suitable for use in domestic or contract applications.

Manta is a dining chair suitable for domestic and contract applications. The innovative use of a multi-directional curved plywood moulding for the combined back and arm rest give the chair a strong sculptural element distinguishing it from the many plywood chairs in the market. Surprisingly this beautiful chair can be stacked, up to 6 chairs high.

Part of Studioilse's Seating for Eating collective, Bench with Back is reassuringly familiar but carefully detailed. Optional upholstered pad softens the seating area. Furniture that you can sit on together, but that still leaves room for the individual.

The perfect synthesis of superior woodwork and fine tailoring is revealed in Elysia. The lounge chair has a solid wood leg construction that cradles the padded shell of the seat and the backrest. The “skeleton”, traditionally hidden inside the upholstery, is deliberately exposed to showcase the craftsmanship and premium timber. The exceptional comfort Elysia offers is visually communicated through the padding enveloping the shell, and the generous folds of fabric on the cushion.
