Flattered Apartments Porto - Sea-facing

In partnership with Flattered Apartments, De La Espada created a rentable holiday home in Porto’s Foz do Douro neighbourhood with panoramic views of the sea. The Flattered founders, Miguel Mateus, Catarina Silva, and Catarina Alves, worked with architect José Carlos Cruz to design the interior architecture, reflecting an empathy for locale and the building’s past: local materials and original features serve as the framework for a space that is contemporary yet rooted in history. Flooring is made from wide boards of local pine heated from below, windows are framed by original granite, and the washroom is clad in Carrara marble with beautiful sky views through the large window.

The split-level apartment includes a dining room on a raised platform, a living room with a hidden pullout bed, and on a mezzanine level, a private bedroom with a pitched roof and skylight. Furniture made just an hour’s drive away at the De La Espada factory in Mira features throughout: Duet Chair, Shaker Round Table, Trio Console Table, Trio Round Coffee Table, Trio Side Table, Frame Sofa, Solo Bench, Extend Mirror, Capo Lounge Armchair, Capo Bed, Commune Stool, and Lianou Stool all designed by Neri&Hu; and Ladder Bookcase designed by Autoban. The home harnesses the thoughtful hospitality of Flattered and combines it with exclusively De La Espada furniture and styling.

Shaker is a dining table inspired by the simple, honest and utilitarian approach of the movement after which it is named. A round tabletop in solid wood or white Carrara marble rests upon a timber leg frame that recalls that of a refectory table. Designed by neri&hu and manufactured by De La Espada for the neri&hu brand.

The Capo Bed is an extension of the Capo series, its simple and modern form enriched with tailoring details that evoke old-world sensibilities.

Capo began as a series of seating, initially designed for the Italian restaurant Capo in Shanghai, where the interior design concept was based on a basilica and possessed an old world charm of masonry enclosure appointed with handsomely crafted detailing.

The Capo is a well-balanced equilibrium between sophistication and utility, between classic and contemporary aesthetic.

Commune Stool is a visual expression of a communal spirit, with multiple legs working together in support. Originally designed for the Das Haus exhibition at the 2015 Cologne Fair, the stool was part of Neri&Hu's vision of the future home as one imbued with ideas of community and a social collective.

Frame is a sofa system supported by a wooden frame structure to which various accessories can be clipped, such as a tray or light. There are almost limitless possible configurations. Designed by neri&hu and manufactured by De La Espada for the neri&hu brand.

Sophisticated and comfortable, Solo Bench works equally well on its own, or as a footstool for Solo Sofa. Designed by neri&hu and manufactured by De La Espada for the neri&hu brand.

In the past, common bamboo ladders were used as household objects inside and outside country homes in China, functioning as an ever-ready stand for hanging a wide variety of things from tools and cloths to dried food. As a tribute to this utilitarian household symbol, neri&hu used three different ladder proportions to make a set of solid hardwood frames for floor standing mirrors. They lean on the floor in a casual manner, as ladders do, and can be used alone or as an interesting ensemble of many ladders with varying heights on the wall. Designed by neri&hu and manufactured by De La Espada for the neri&hu brand.

Duet is named for the two flowing lines of timber that form the overall shape of the chair. Originally created as a variation on the classic Thonet bent-wood tradition, the Duet Chair is actually made from a series of carved wood components, revealing a stunning composition of grain patterns. Once carved, each component is joined with mortise and tenon for a seamless, stable frame. Designed by neri&hu and manufactured by De La Espada for the neri&hu brand.

The Trio series is a tectonic exploration where the composition of the table legs is the design focal point. The tables stand on three legs, with each leg attached to another leg with an intermediate horizontal substructure. The tables express a purity of form and material, with the unexpected design focus under the table, where an intricately composed lattice work brings a hidden elegance to the otherwise simple and unassuming table ensemble. Designed by neri&hu and manufactured by De La Espada for the neri&hu brand.
