Casa de la Luz

View image for Casa de la Luz

Casa de la Luz is a private residential project by Mexican architectural studio, C Cubica Arquitectos. Located in Mexico DF, the two storey house takes its name, 'House of Light' from the abundance of natural light that pours through the glass facade to illuminate the interior.

A beautiful front door of Guanacaste wood opens to an impressive double height lobby with a wooden lattice which welcomes the visitor to the first floor of the house. Here a family room, living room, bedrooms and the kitchen can be found. Marble floors and walls, combined with a wooden ceiling and double height windows integrate the indoor and outdoor spaces. Autoban´s Deer Chairs in walnut and microfibre silk are used in the dining area, where modernity, warmth and nature intertwine.

The Botanist, located on London's Sloane Square, is a restaurant from Tom and Ed Martin, whose gastro-empire includes The Gun and the Empress of India. Named after the pioneering naturalist, Sir Hans Sloane, the interior design reflects both nature and the chic urban setting. Designer, Laura Van Zeveren used warm neutral tones combined with a generous use of wood to create a contemporary interior inspired by the natural world. Floor to ceiling windows illuminate the focal point of the dining room - a mural by artist Adam Ellis, featuring illustrations from Sir Hans' journals. Upon oak flooring rest oak tables accompanied by Deer armchair by Autoban.

Aveleda

Aveleda

Set in the historic building of Alfandega do Porto, the Aveleda restaurant at The Oporto Show 2008 benefited from stunning original features including dramatically high ceilings and grand, oversized doors and windows allowing the Porto sun to spill across the space. Designer, Paulo Lobo created a contemporary dining room using natural materials to complement the wood and stone features present in the building. The backdrop for the space was formed from large wooden shipping pallets stacked and intersected to recall the contours of a cityscape. Upon the stone floor rested mirrored café tables, like reflective ponds upon which cutlery floated. Fifty Bergere chairs and eight Bergere Sofas by Autoban helped define the natural, contemporary aesthetic while providing relaxed seating for guests. Tulip lamps by Autoban punctuated the space, illuminating select areas of the sun soaked room.

Istanbul Suites

View image for Istanbul Suites

Istanbul Suites is a luxury hotel designed by Autoban, located in the Cihangir neighbourhood of Istanbul. Through the windows, you can view the entire historic quarter, including Topkapi Palace, Galata Tower and the big mosques in Sultanahmet. Keeping a modernist approach, the sandstone facade of the building was inspired by the imposing appearance of the Tophane-i Amire Building at the end of the street. The long windows and French balconies of Istanbul Suites reflect the architectural style of the Italian Hospital just opposite the hotel.

Each room was designed as one open plan space where you can eat, rest and sleep. Laser cut wood or iron create layered patterns, and combine with existing Autoban furniture. Some of the furniture has been adapted to the hotel concept. The bathroom walls are made of traditional Marmara marble which is the main material in the Ottoman architectural style. The whole ambiance provides a unique experience where the visitors can broaden their horizons and breathe Istanbul.

Autoban designs from the Autoban Built By De La Espada range found in Istanbul Suites include Box Sofa, Sleepy, Booklamp, Magnolia, Ring, Bergere Bed, King, Tulip, Scrub, and Woody.

Farina Focaccia and Cucina Italiana

View image for Farina Focaccia and Cucina Italiana

Farina, located in San Francisco's Mission District, offers natural, simple, homemade Ligurian cuisine made from quality organic ingredients in respect of seasons. The restaurant, designed by Brett Terpeluk and Monica Viarengo, reflects the ethos of the food through the use of robust, solid materials coupled with a keen attention to detail. The exposed joists, floor to ceiling subway tile, and lacquered wood paneling, all tinted with varying hues and gloss of creamy white, are offset by the grays of the concrete floor, blackened steel, and zinc counters. Free-standing linear counters are composed of reclaimed hand-hewn Genovese marble sinks, cut and re-assembled to form a sculptural presence. Double Octopus by Autoban illuminates the space, suspended above custom built communal tables made from solid Guanacaste wood. Windows of curved laminated glass wrap around the facade, allowing daylight to spill over the dining room during the day.

TWG Law Loft

View image for TWG Law Loft

Design partners Michael Tower and Mark Kolodziejczak of Studio Tractor conceived the new 8000 square foot TWG Law Firm space as an expansive loft environment with a warm modern sensibility. The modern interior celebrates the building’s historic loft heritage. Restored cast iron columns, historically-correct 8-foot-high wood frame windows, and exposed steam radiators in the conference room give voice to an era of grand industrial rawness. Smooth white plaster walls and ceiling express a crisp minimalism, while full-height translucent glass panels allow natural light to penetrate beyond the outer ring of offices and conference areas. Carved within the custom-designed white Corian reception desk, a luminescent blue glass panel creates a splash of color that resonates with the company’s blue logo. The Box Sofa by Autoban in solid American white oak is set against a solid oak floor. Two facing sofas create a welcoming seating area while making a strong visual statement.

The Marmara Sisli Hotel

View image for The Marmara Şişli Hotel

Autoban's redesign of The Marmara Şişli Hotel, a member of Turkey’s most prestigious hotel chain, began with the replacement of the existing façade. Custom-made aluminium pipes divide the façade into three sections, making the high-rise building an attractive feature of the cityscape. Spread over eleven floors with eight rooms per floor, the new Marmara Şişli offers three types of accommodation: Candy rooms, Capsule rooms and Wagon rooms. All bedrooms feature Autoban’s usual raw and contrasting materials, the ceilings bearing bold motifs on concrete. Taking cues from the Japanese-style capsule hotels, Autoban designed 6,5 m2 rooms for the mezzanine floor. These compact rooms are ideal for the lone traveler, and increase the hotel’s capacity to 104. To turn the lobby into a lively public area, an all-concrete bar is placed near the main entrance and the reception desk is unusually situated at a rather rear location. The overall result is 50’s modernist.

Tres Encinas

Tres Encinas is a well-known seafood and fish restaurant serving since 1967. In 2010, Autoban redesigned the interior with a focus on being true to local materials- the essential base of the Arts and Crafts movement- concentrating on tiles, furniture, glass and metalwork. The ceiling recalls Art Nouveau with an ornamental metal lattice, a feature continued to the design of the doors separating the main dining rooms. The walls are embellished with custom made tiles with pictorial stories about fishermen and sea life. The floor has a classical style parquetry which is repeated in the ceiling of the bar area, the wood bringing a sociable warmth to the restaurant. Nordico

Tucked away on a quiet street in the centre of Leon, Spain, is Nordico, a bakery and cafe designed by Rosa Maria Yaguez and Juan Manuel Villanueva of Bahu Estudio. A small plantation of birch trees along the facade welcomes visitors, while playfully altering the levels of natural light that stream through the cafe in varying seasons. The interior utilises natural, austere materials with a focus on quality without pretension. Materials include white compact laminate, stainless steel, glass and white lacquered metal. The predominantly white space is punctuated by an accent wall which simulates the different layers of a cake through narrow strips of chipboard, wood, acrylic, and felt. Tone Chair by Leif.designpark provides seating at the stark white tables, the parquetry of varying timbers in this context also alluding to the rich layers of a confection.

Refresh Room

Refresh Room is located on the 47th floor of Ark Hills Sengokuyama Mori Tower, a high-rise office and residential building in Tokyo. Designed by Leif.designpark, the space is light and airy, and features a neutral colour palette. It is divided by a translucent glass wall, separating the smoking room from the main lounge area. The translucency of the glass provides a connection between the adjacent spaces, and gives both smokers and non-smokers an awareness of one another. Nature is brought into the space through a ceiling detail recalling the arc of tree branches, the careful placement of plant life, and the frequent occurrence of Tone Chair by Leif.designpark, which uses a variety of timbers in the spirit of traditional Japanese parquetry.

The Waterhouse Boutique Hotel at South Bund

View image for The Waterhouse Boutique Hotel at South Bund

Located by the new Cool Docks development on the South Bund District of Shanghai, the Waterhouse is a four-story, 19-room boutique hotel built into an existing three-story Japanese Army headquarters building from the 1930’s. The boutique hotel fronts the Huangpu River and looks across at the gleaming Pudong skyline. The architectural concept behind Neri&Hu’s renovation rests on a clear contrast of what is old and new. The original concrete building has been restored while new additions built over the existing structure were made using Cor-Ten steel, reflecting the industrial past of this working dock by the Huangpu River. Neri&Hu’s structural addition, on the fourth floor, resonates with the industrial nature of the ships which pass through the river, providing an analogous contextual link to both history and local culture.

Neri&Hu was also responsible for the design of the hotel’s interior, which is expressed through both a blurring and inversion of the interior and exterior, as well as between the public and private realms, creating a disorienting yet refreshing spatial experience for the hotel guest who longs for an unique five-star hospitality experience. The public spaces allow one to peek into private rooms while the private spaces invite one to look out at the public arenas, such as the large vertical room window above the reception desk and the corridor windows overlooking the dining room. These visual connections of unexpected spaces not only bring an element of surprise, but also force the hotel guests to confront the local Shanghai urban condition where visual corridors and adjacencies in tight nong-tang’s define the unique spatial flavor of the city.

Solo Dining Chair and Extend Mirrors by neri&hu are used throughout.

Mercato Italian Restaurant at Three on the Bund

View image for Mercato Italian Restaurant at Three on the Bund

Situated within the prestigious Three on the Bund, Mercato is renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s newest culinary destination in Shanghai, the first of which to serve up an upscale yet rustic Italian fare. Neri&Hu’s design for the 1,000 square meter restaurant draws not only from the chef’s culinary vision but also from the rich historical context of its locale, harkening to early 1900s Shanghai, when the Bund was a bustling industrial hub.

Stripping back the strata of finishes that have built up after years of renovations, the design concept celebrates the beauty of the bare structural elements. Three on the Bund was the first building in Shanghai to be built out of steel, and the architects’ decision to reveal the original steel columns pays homage to this extraordinary feat. Against the textured backdrop of the existing brickwork, concrete, plaster and mouldings, new insertions are clearly demarcated. Constantly playing the new against the old, Neri&Hu’s design is a reflection of the complex identity of not only the historical Bund, but of Shanghai at large. Duet Chair and Solo Lounge Chair are used throughout.

As a workshop, store and a creation lab it is used to reveal the philosophy and the creative process behind the final products. Also, part of the new surroundings is to give customers the opportunity to meet the designers, shop for prototypes and final designs, and experience what the team is inspired by.

In the Copenhagen showroom you will find pieces from De La Espada and Muuto, the hand-built Tribeca lamps, limited edition furniture, handmade bedspreads, and also selected books, magazines and graphics.
